“Jannik Sinner can emulate Novak Djokovic”

Barazzutti: "Jannik Sinner can emulate Novak Djokovic"

Novak Djokovic had a simply exceptional 2021, which led him to only one victory since the Grand Slam. After winning the first three Slams of the season, the world number 1 made it to the final at the US Open against Daniil Medvedev.

With the chance to write a memorable page of history, the Serbian champion got stuck falling clearly under the blows of the Russian. If he won in New York, Nole would repeat Rod Laver’s legendary feat and take the lead in the all-time Grand Slam standings (he currently shares the record with eternal rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal).

The 34-year-old from Belgrade will be back in action next week at Paris-Bercy, a preparatory tournament ahead of the ATP Finals in Turin and the Davis Cup finals. Among the players who have stood out in recent weeks is Jannik Sinner.

The 20-year-old Italian, fresh from triumphs in Sofia and Antwerp, is in full swing for a place in Turin, even after the sensational defeat in the semi-final in Vienna against Frances Tiafoe, where he was leading in the second set by 5-1.

Barazzutti on Sinner

In a recent interview with Adnkronos, former Italian Davis Cup captain Corrado Barazzutti made a parallel between Sinner and Djokovic. He said: “I’ve said it many times: Jannik Sinner has all the credentials to become ATP number 1 after Novak Djokovic’s reign is over.

Sinner is forging ahead to reach the top of the standings. Meanwhile, he has an excellent chance of qualifying for the ATP Finals in Turin. I hope he decides to play Davis Cup. Given the presence of Matteo Berrettini and all the others, I would not be surprised if Italy lifted the trophy.

Paolo Bertolucci echoed him: “Sinner has extraordinary potential and is predestined, but let’s take it slow. Djokovic is the best ever, so we don’t run too much. Jannik is serious, diligent, professional and takes defeats with the right attitude.

. Learn from them and don’t grumble. I’m sure it will give us great satisfaction.” Djokovic should play the ATP Finals in Turin, while his rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal should come back for the new 2022 season.
