Gareth Southgate backs Harry Kane to shatter England goal record

England boss Gareth Southgate has backed Harry Kane to go ‘way beyond’ Wayne Rooney’s record of 53 goals for the Three Lions before he hangs his boots up.

Kane, who turned 28 in July, moved into joint-third with Gary Lineker on the country’s all-time scoring charts on Monday, bagging four goals in the 10-0 win over San Marino to take his overall tally to 48.

Ahead of him now are Sir Bobby Charlton (49) and Rooney, who managed 53 goals in 120 appearances for England.

Kane’s national team career is just 67 games old, and Southgate confessed that he expects the Tottenham striker to completely smash Rooney’s record before all is said and done.

“[Setting a new standard] will definitely be one of his goals and the remarkable thing is we haven’t given him nights like tonight [against lower-ranked teams] too often,” Southgate said (via The Times).
