Frampton Views Beterbiev as Very Dangerous Fight For Canelo

Former two division champion Carl Frampton views WBC, IBF light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev as a very “dangerous” fight for Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Beterbiev (16-0, 16 KOs) has knocked out every opponent that he ever stepped in the ring with.

Canelo has captured world titles at junior middleweight, middleweight, super middleweight – and even light heavyweight.

He briefly went up to light heavyweight in 2019, to capture the WBO world title with a knockout victory over Sergey Kovalev.

In the aftermath, Canelo returned to 168-pounds.

This coming Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Canelo will collide with undefeated Caleb Plant in a full division unification at 168-pounds – with the WBC, IBF, WBA, WBO world title on the line. The contest will be carried on Showtime Pay-Per-View.

Should Canelo win, his handlers have mentioned the scenario of returning to 175-pounds – and Beterbiev has been named as a potential foe.

The fight would present so much danger that Frampton wouldn’t be surprised if a catch-weight is suggested.

“You move up to light heavyweights and Beterbiev gives him problems, that is a dangerous fight.  And if he takes that fight – because it has been mentioned – it’s a dangerous, dangerous fight,” Frampton said to The Sun.

“But I’d imagine if it does come off, it would probably be a few pounds below light heavyweight to suit Canelo.”

As far as Plant, Frampton expects him to give Canelo in the early going – but ultimately he backs the Mexican star to make adjustments to win the fight and even secure a possible stoppage.

“I think it’s a good fight, I think Plant will give Canelo a few issues for a while, but I think [Canelo will] figure him out and beat him, potentially stop him late,” Frampton said.

“Maybe beat him on points, but I think there will be a few rounds, especially in the first half of the fight, his movement will cause Canelo some problems. But [Canelo will] work him out, like he works them all out.”
