Eden Hazard is not expected to push for a move away from Real Madrid in the summer, despite his continued struggle for minutes.
The 30-year-old has started just four La Liga games this season, finding himself stuck behind the electric Vinicius Junior in the pecking order. Manager Carlo Ancelotti has even publicly admitted he prefers the young Brazilian these days.
Those comments, coupled with tenuous links to Chelsea and Newcastle United, saw Ancelotti confess that he would not stand in the way of Hazard if he asked to leave the Santiago Bernabeu, but Marca don’t expect that to happen.
The belief is that Hazard is not humouring an exit from the club midway through the season and he is solely focused on finally proving himself to the Real fans after years of frustration.
Hazard, who joined from Chelsea in 2019 in a deal which could rise up to £150m, has managed just five goals in 53 appearances, with repeated injury struggles and underwhelming form seeing him fail to impress at the Bernabeu.
He had hoped to put those issues behind him this season, but Hazard’s progress has been completely shut down by Vinicius, who has been among Europe’s top players this season with a return of nine goals and five assists in 14 games.
Despite Ancelotti’s preference to use Vinicius, Hazard is not thought to have a poor relationship with the boss and is solely focused on proving his worth to a manager who has dropped him right down in the pecking order.
However, from Real’s perspective, they are now open to offloading Hazard. He remains on an expensive contract which expires in 2024 and Los Blancos would prefer to rid themselves off that in the near future, with big-money moves for Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe hopefully on the horizon.
They want to recover some of the money they spent on Hazard and accept that they are unlikely to get that during the winter window, but they also do not want to weaken the depth of their squad ahead of a push for the La Liga title.
They will look to sell Hazard in the summer, but whether any sides are actually interested in signing him is unclear.
